In August 2022, multiple significant weather-related slips led to the closure of SH1 through the Mangamuka Gorge. The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) is working diligently to ensure the Far North roading network remains accessible and resilient in the face of future weather challenges. The project is focused on creating reliable, safe roading that can better withstand severe weather events into the future.
This project involves addressing 36 slips, of which 16 are critical, requiring the installation of 1,332 piles. A total of 187 companies are contributing their expertise to this endeavor. Rock Control takes pride in playing a key role in the restoration of this crucial section of highway.
The flyover below provides a comprehensive overview of the project, highlighting the complexities and the various ground engineering techniques being employed to repair the different slips along this important route.
